Medgaz Natural Gas Pipeline
Connecting North Africa to Southern Europe
We had the privilege to participate in Medgaz project linking North Africa to Europe. This 8.3 billion cubic meter per year pipeline directly links the Algerian gas fields at Beni Saf to the Spanish coast at Almería. Our involvement in this complex, high-pressure subsea and overland project required close coordination with the international joint venture. Our work supported the project’s successful delivery, enhancing Europe’s energy security.
The total investment for the Medgaz pipeline, connecting Algeria to Spain, was approximately €900 million to €1 billion for its initial construction (completed in 2011). This included the 210 km offshore section, onshore infrastructure, and, in 2021, a $90 million expansion to increase capacity.

- Sonatrach (Algeria) – The national oil and gas company and a principal partner in the project.
- Naturgy Energy Group, S.A. (Spain) – Formerly known as Gas Natural, a key utility partner and off-taker.
- Cepsa (Spain) – The Spanish multinational oil and gas company integral to the development.
- Engie (France) – Formerly GDF Suez, the French multinational utility company.
- ABB / ABB Vetco Gray (Switzerland/Sweden) – We collaborated with the teams from ABB, including legacy companies like Arkad ABB, on the pipeline’s electrical, instrumentation, and telecommunications (EIT) or subsea systems.
- Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Japan) – A major global trading and investment company and a key project stakeholder.
- Rolls-Royce (United Kingdom) – We worked alongside Rolls-Royce, likely contributing to the integration of their gas compression or power generation systems.
- Mitsui & Sumitomo: Manufactured and supplied the steel pipes
- Lloyd’s Register: Provided inspection and certification services.
- Saipem: Responsible for the offshore pipeline engineering, construction, and pre-commissioning using vessels like Saipem 7000 and Castoro Sei
